Courage and Acceptance Broke My Pain Barrier – Martin Stark

Over recent years, Martin Stark, an amateur boxer feels like he has been through 12 rounds of a boxing match outside of the mat, having survived two comas, a tracheotomy, and a number of operations over very few years, for a time living with undiagnosed Addison’s disease, and nerve ending damage.

Martin lived with severe pain, with chronic episodes every few weeks, which impacted his ability to work, and going to the gym during his free time, 

“I received a prescription for oxycontin, but did not like taking it, and after a diagnosis of incisional hernia and subsequent surgery, I was referred to the Royal North Shore Pain Management Research Centre,” Martin said. Martin progressed through the ADAPT program, learning new pain management techniques, to manage the pain differently.

According to Martin, he received the pioneering treatment of pulsed radio frequency, which helps to “switch off” the pain for 12 months, with the treatment continuing for the last 10 years.

“I also learned techniques so I could manage the pain more effectively,” Martin said.

According to Martin, those living with chronic pain should have an open mind and understand the difference between curing the pain and managing it.

“Whilst you have to accept the pain is there, it doesn’t mean the level of pain being experienced now will be the same level of pain in the future.” 

“It is the difference between life liberating and life limiting pain,” Martin said.
