Distress experienced while recovering from compensable injury – Alison Sim

Alison Sim MSc Med (Pain Management)

Alison Sim, PhD candidate at The University of Sydney, School of Medicine, presented some of the work that she has undertaken together with the research team at the 44th Australian Pain Society conference in Darwin (21-24 April, 2024).  The presentation provided an update on several recent studies that are in the publication pipelines exploring the experiences of people who have had an injury in the setting of a compensation claim.

This important work helps the research team to accurately identify what injured people find most difficulty during the recovery period so that we can create targeted programs to help improve recovery.  The work explores the idea that people often find a lack of information about the claims process to be distressing and that the experience of making a claim can be confusing and isolating.  The research team are working hard to develop and test early intervention programs to help people to navigate the claims process and manage their pain in the time following injury.

Alison has worked with people with persistent pain for many years. She has a masters degree in pain management and is undertaking a PhD exploring the optimisation of pain management strategies. She is a registered osteopath with AHPRA.
