After graduating from University of Sydney Medical School (1981), Paul undertook physician training at RPAH during which time he developed an interest in cancer pain and palliative care. In 2007 he was recruited by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York to be the Chief of the Pain & Palliative Care Service. He returned to Sydney in 2016 to take up the position of Chair of Pain Medicine at the University of Sydney and as the Director of the Pain Management Research Centre vacated by Prof Michael Cousins. Paul is a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA. His main research interests are cancer pain/cancer survivor pain, using digital technologies to support chronic patients to reduce their reliance on opioids.
