Unlocking the Science of Pain: Inside A/Prof Karin Aubrey’s Groundbreaking Research

Pain Foundation Limited recently had the pleasure of catching up with A/Prof Karin Aubrey, whose Pain Management Research team at the Kolling Institute and the University of Sydney is working to better understand the complex science behind chronic pain.

Our conversation provided a fascinating insight into the important research being undertaken to improve the lives of people living with persistent pain, and the potential for new approaches to pain management.

A/Prof Aubrey’s research team is particularly interested in the relationship between mental health and chronic pain, exploring how changes within the brain can influence the experience of pain and how this knowledge might lead to more effective and innovative treatments.

Her research focuses on understanding the brain circuits involved in pain and neurotransmission. The team uses a range of sophisticated approaches, including electrophysiology, behavioural models, brain circuit tracing and the study of glycinergic neurotransmission, to investigate how the nervous system processes and responds to pain.

This work is helping researchers build a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to pain, knowledge that is essential for developing better ways to prevent, manage and ultimately conquer chronic pain.

At Pain Foundation Limited, we are proud to support research that seeks to answer some of the most important questions surrounding pain and its treatment. Connecting with researchers such as A/Prof Aubrey highlights the vital role that medical research plays in creating hope and opening the door to new possibilities for people living with pain.

We look forward to following the progress of A/Prof Aubrey and her team as they continue to explore the science behind pain and work towards a future where innovative, evidence-based approaches can make a meaningful difference to people living with chronic pain.
